Harvest 2008 and Beyond

"2008 was a vintage all about the weather. In August, coming in to harvest, I was visiting the vineyards more than ever to get an early handle on when fruit would be ready from all the different vineyards. With all the conditions of the growing season affecting vineyards differently, we knew it would be anyones guess as far as ripening times for the different varieties (different varieties usually ripen at predictable time increments. i.e.-Zinfandel first, then Sangiovese, then Syrah, etc.). Sure enough, normal ripening patterns were a bit out of order, and almost everything was ready around the same time. For how fast and furious everything came in, I'd like to think we handled it quite well, as the 2008 wines are showing great concentration of color and flavors, and balanced acidity (even if a few are a bit higher alcohol than we might want). With a little blending down the road, 2008 will be a very attractive vintage."
